Michael "Doc" Clancey is a native of Northwest Iowa and has been involved in music picking up his first guitar at age 12. Doc was bitten by the music bug in the mid 80's when his group "The Late Night Band" played clubs throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois. "The Brass Bullet Band" soon followed and turned him into a fan of southern and classic rock music. Doc has been involved in the local music scene for over 20 years. Musical influences include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, the Allman Brothers, CCR, Marshall Tucker, Mellencamp, ZZTop and a host of others. Doc owns a busy chiropractic practice in Fairmont, when he's not busy working or performing with Dark Horse he enjoys his Harley, fishing and working on cars. Doc is the founding member of Dark Horse. He knew from the early jam sessions that this band of grizzled music veterans had an incredible vibe, an obvious musical chemistry as well as mutual admiration and respect of each other. Doc has an unrivaled natural ability to belt out the great classic rock hits that Dark Horse speciliazes in. Doc looks forward to every show and has a great time singing and putting on a "Kick Ass" show.
The bottom end for Dark Horse is held up firmly by our bass player, Brad Blume. Brad was born in Mankato, raised in Amboy and has been a long-time resident of North Mankato. He has worked hard in the local music scene since 1974. Also known as "Bassfingers", he has been a rocker ever since he saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, which was also the about the time he got his first guitar. Brad joined his first band "The Shadows of Time" as a guitar player when he was in junior high school. Soon after he switched to bass for a high school band, "The Grass Harp". They played proms, street dances and homecomings all over the southern part of the state. His passion for music carried in the college years where Brad became an original member of "Small Change". That band traveled extensively as part of the Artist Corp of America agency, playing hotel circuits across the midwest througout the mid 1970's. In 1982 Small Change recorded a record which climbed to the local C & N top ten. Brad has a great respect for all the bands and the bass players he has covered over the years and considers them all an inspiration and influence.
Steve Jablinske, better known as Jabby to the masses, is the heart of the band. With his John Bonham Ludwig kit he lays down some powerful thumping drums. Jabby, who resides in Fairmont, has played in several bands in the past with current bandmate Lee as well as a long list of his own. Jabby's first band was called "Interstate Connection", followed by "The Presence" with Lee. Other bands include: "Baking Powder Biscuit Band", "Peru", "Karm", "Stages", "Bandana", "The Crayz". Steve has a broad range of influences from Fleetwood Mac, Kiss, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Boston, Chicago, Styx, The Beatles, Santana and Joe Walsh. Steve's favorite drummers are John Henry Bonham, Peter Criss, Keith Moon, Lee Dellacruz and his own father. Jabby loves music and loves to be on the stage. He's one of the finest drummers around and Dark Horse is privileged to have such a dedicated and talented musician. Jabby says we are all "Brothers in Arms" and he enjoys the "moments" and friendships in the band while making kick ass Rock N Roll.
Lee Meachem has been playing guitar since forever (or 1975, whichever came first). His smooth melodic style and ability to replicate famous riffs with perfection compliments all the various styles and songs the band performs. "Toz", "The Presence", "Thin Ice", "Stages", "Baking Powder Biscuit Band" are just a few of the bands that Lee has been a member of. Lee has been in acts opening for Head East, Night Ranger, Ted Nugent and Steppenwolf. If you get a chance, ask him about some of the famous musicians he knows or has met. Lee has been influenced by Eric Clapton, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, the Beatles and all the kick ass Southern Rockers since the beginning of "Real" music. When asked about playing in Dark Horse Lee says: "There are five guys that have the same mission to play Rock and Roll all night long. We have a chemistry that goes beyond the stage. It's like playing with your brothers so there is more to the music than what is presented on the stage. I think we really give a shit about each other on and off the stage." Lee and Mike compliment each other on guitars just like gravy on mashed potatoes!
Mike Budach grew up in Glenville, Minnesota and migrated to the Mankato area in the late 1970's. He picked up the guitar around 1968 at the age of 12 and has been playing in bands on and off since 1974. Some of those bands include "Street Legal", "Hot Summer Night", "Tumble Weed", the kick ass hard rock band "BKM", and "Small Change" in the 1990's. Some of Mike's influences are Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, AC/DC and the Beatles. He shares the same live performance passion as the rest of the band. He says: "We're all on the same page and like our rock and roll a little on the edgy side. When we put this band together our charter become to play classic rock with some energy and drive behind it and I think we've been able to do that while staying true to the originals. These guys talked me into coming out of retirement and I wouldn't have done it for anyone else. To me there is nothing better than to be rocking hard and hit that 'zone'. You can always tell it's a good night when someone comes up to you and says YOU GUYS ROCK!!". His best advice? "You're never too old to rock and roll!"
